Method 1: Clear Windows Update Cache

  • Click Start and start typing “services.msc” on the keyboard
  • Click on it, a new window will open
  • Search for “Windows Update
  • Rightclick on “Windows Update” and click Stop.

We will now clear the Windows Update cache folder:

  • Open run app (Windows key +R)
  • Type % windir% \ Software Distribution \ Datastore and click OK.
  • In that window, Delete all contents in this folder.
  • Now we start the Windows Update service again:
  • Open Windows Services (services.msc)
  • Find Windows Update.
  • Rightclick on it and select Start.

If the problem persists, you can run the System File Checker (SFC) utility. This built-in tool scans your file system.

  • Click Start and type Rightclick on it and click Run as Administrator.
  • If the admin asks you for the password, enter the password and click OK.
  • In the command window type sfc / scannow and press enter.
  • The process may take some time to complete
  • Restart your computer to make changes come into effect

Method 2: Clear windows update download path

Note: This option may not be available in latest Windows update

  • Open run app (Windows key +R) and type regedit
  • On the left-hand side, locate through the following
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows \ WindowsUpdate
  • Search for WUServer and WIStatusServer in the right pane. And click on delete
  • Restart your computer.

Method 3: Rename software distribution folder

  • Open run app (Windows key +R)
  • Enter “msc” and click OK
  • Search for “Windows Update
  • Rightclick on it and then click Stop.
  • Go to C: (or whichever your Local Drive is) > Windows. Find the SoftwareDistribution
  • Rename it to SoftwareDistributionOld.
  • Restart windows update from services.msc again
  • Restart your computer
